THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MATTHEW

On January 15, 2017, the Adult Forum Bible Study will begin a study of the Gospel According to Matthew. The class will be held at 10:15 on Sunday mornings thru April, following the worship service. The final schedule for the class will be available by the time of the first class. Lay instructor David Moore will lead our study.

Each gospel offers its own unique perspective on the life, teachings, death and resurrection of Jesus. Matthew stands first in line among the four gospels, and provides the text for our current church year. Written after Mark and before John, Matthew reveals Jesus as the Messiah, the king of Israel who transfers his authority to his church, and then appears after his death to promise his followers that he will continue to be present with them until the end of the age. The creation of the church plays an important role in this gospel. In fact, only in this particular gospel does the word “church” appear. Matthew includes five major discourses of the sayings of Jesus, who stands as a unique, authoritative revealer of the law, offering a new interpretation that both fulfills and supersedes the law of Moses.

This class offers an opportunity to fulfill your New Year’s resolution to become more familiar with the Scriptures and to participate in a serious discussion with our fellow members about the foundations of our faith. If you are interested, just come to the Conference Room on any Sunday morning and join us!
